Methanol, Anhydrous

Methanol, Anhydrous Methanol of commerce specially dried for use in Karl Fischer determinations and other non-aqueous titrations. It may be prepared in the following manner.

Treat 1000 mL of methanol with 5 g of magnesium. If necessary, initiate the reaction by adding 0.1 mL of mercury(ii) chloride solution. When the evolution of gas has ceased, distil the liquid and collect the distillate in a dry container protected from moisture.

Complies with the following test.
