Definition

Silver Nitrate Solution is a cutaneous solution. It contains Silver Nitrate in Purified Water.

The solution complies with the requirements stated under Liquids for Cutaneous Application, the requirements stated under Unlicensed Medicines and with the following requirements.

Content of silver nitrate, AgNO3

95.0 to 105.0% of the stated amount.

Identification

Yields the reactions characteristic of silver salts and of nitrates, Appendix VI.

Tests
Acidity

pH, 4.5 to 6.0, Appendix V L.

Clarity and colour of solution

The solution is clear, Appendix IV A, and colourless, Appendix IV B, Method II.

Assay

Dilute a volume containing 50 mg of Silver Nitrate with 20 mL of water and add 2 mL of dilute nitric acid and 2 mL of ammonium iron(iii) sulfate solution R2. Titrate with 0.02m ammonium thiocyanate VS until a reddish-yellow colour is obtained. Each mL of 0.02m ammonium thiocyanate VS is equivalent to 3.397 mg of AgNO3.

Storage

Silver Nitrate Solution should be protected from light.

The label indicates the pharmaceutical form as 'cutaneous solution'.
