Methanol, Anhydrous
Treat 1000 mL of methanol with 5 g of magnesium. If necessary initiate the reaction by adding 0.1 mL of mercuric chloride solution. When the evolution of gas has ceased, distil the liquid and collect the distillate in a dry container protected from moisture.
