Literature References: Prepd by heating an aq soln of glucose with a catalyst, sulfur, and hydrogen at 150° and 1500 psi for 3 hrs: Farlow et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 70, 1392 (1948).
Properties: Crystals from abs alcohol, mp 92-93°. Nonhygroscopic. [a]D27 -1.9° (c = 2). Readily sol in water, pyridine, ethylene glycol, formamide; practically insol in benzene, petr ether, carbon tetrachloride; carbon disulfide. Solubilities at 20° in g/100 ml solvent: 1.7 in abs alcohol; 1.2 in dioxane; 0.016 in ethyl ether; 0.016 in trichloroethylene; 0.010 in acetone. Strong reducing agent.
Melting point: mp 92-93°
Optical Rotation: [a]D27 -1.9° (c = 2)
Use: Suggested as a polymer stabilizer; anticorrosion agent for pickling baths; in plating baths.
