Title: Ethylstibamine
CAS Registry Number: 1338-98-3
Manufacturers' Codes: Bayer 693
Trademarks: Neostibosan; Stibosamine; Astaril
Literature References: A complex of p-aminobenzenestibonic acid (present largely as a tetramer), p-acetylaminobenzenestibonic acid (present largely as a dimer), antimonic acid and diethylamine in the approx molar ratio of 1:2:1:3. Contains 41 to 44% organic pentavalent antimony (the acetyl content is between 6 and 7%). The manuf requires special care since the compd is both a colloid and a molecular addition compd and slight variations affect its toxicity greatly: Schmidt, Angew. Chem. 43, 963 (1930); US 1988632, C.A. 29, 1586 (1935).
Properties: Light-yellow to yellowish-brown powder. Freely sol in water forming neutral, colloidal solns. The pH of a 5% soln is between 6.5 and 7.6. A 25% soln is approx isotonic. Solns for injection should be prepd immediately before use with sterile distilled water, as they are unstable on heating or standing.
Therap-Cat: Antiprotozoal (Leishmania).
Keywords: Antiprotozoal (Leishmania).
