Title: Methylol Riboflavine
Literature References: Mixture of methylol (CH2OH) derivatives of riboflavine formed by the action of formaldehyde on riboflavine in weakly alkaline soln. The number of methylol groups in the ribityl moiety varies from 1 to 3. Prepn: Schoen, Gordon, Arch. Biochem. 22, 149 (1949); US 2587533 (1952 to Endo Prod.).
Properties: Orange to yellow, hygroscopic powder. May have a slight odor of formaldehyde. Sol in water. Practically insol in alcohol, benzene, chloroform, ether. Dextrorotatory. The pH of a 10% aq soln is between 6.7 and 7.9. The dry powder is unstable and loses its biological activity in the course of several months with the liberation of formalde-hyde and the partial formation of products practically insol in water.
