Properties: Red powder. [a]D -374.5° (0.1% HCl). Absorption max (methanolic HCl): 286, 313, 507 nm. Sol in water and methanol. The aq soln is scarlet in color, changed to violet by Na2CO3 and to light brown by excess NaOH.
