Literature References: Prepd from dibenzoyl peroxide by treatment with a soln of sodium methoxide in methanol at 0°: Braun, Org. Synth. 13, 86 (1933); cf. Bergmann, Witte, DE 409779; Chem. Zentralbl. 1925, I, 1911.
Properties: Leaflets from benzene. Acrid odor. mp 41-43°. Very volatile. Sublimes in desiccator. bp15 100-110° (partial decomposition). Volatile with steam. Very sparingly sol in water, but turns liquid upon contact with water; sparingly sol in petr ether; freely sol in other organic solvents. Stability of solns with chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, ether, benzene: Prileshajew, Chem. Zentralbl. 1911, I, 1280; Kolthoff et al., J. Polym. Sci. 2, 199 (1947), C.A. 41, 4960 (1947). Forms an unstable acid sodium salt, and a somewhat more stable neutral sodium salt.
Melting point: mp 41-43°
Boiling point: bp15 100-110° (partial decomposition)
Use: To convert ethylenic compounds into oxides; in analysis of unsatd compounds, to determine the number of double bonds.
