Properties: White, odorless, deliquesc crystals or granules. Gradually absorbs up to about 5% (½ mol) moisture on exposure to air. Slowly becomes brown in the air due to liberation of iodine. Its aq soln is similarly affected. d 3.67. mp 651°. One gram dissolves in 0.5 ml water, ~2 ml alc, 1 ml glycerol; sol in acetone. It is made slightly alkaline to render it more stable. pH: 8-9.5. Keep well closed and protected from light. At ordinary room temp crystallizes from water with 2H2O in the form of colorless, prismatic crystals. Incompat. As of potassium iodide. Therap-Cat-Vet: Actinobacillosis, actinomycosis. Expectorant. Has been used for ringworm, hyperplastic fibrous lesions, paraplegia from pachymeningitis of dogs.
