Properties: White crystals or cryst powder. Colored pink by traces of iron. mp ~120° when anhydr; at higher temp dec into phenol and salicylic acid. Very sol in water or alcohol; sol in ether. Generally sol in polar solvents. Keep well closed and protected from light.

CAUTION: Irritating to skin, mucous membranes.
Use: Clinical reagent for albumin in urine; colorimetric reagent for ferric ion with which it gives a violet color. It is a trifunctional aromatic compound, undergoing reactions typical of phenols, carboxylic and sulfonic acid groups. Suggested industrial uses: metal chelating agent, intermediate in the manuf of surface-active agents, organic catalysts and grease additives.
