Properties: Dark green powder or granules with a metallic lustre. Absorption max: 628 nm. Very sol in water; sol in ethanol. Dull orange soln in conc H2SO4, changing to dull green on dilution. Orange soln in conc HCl or conc HNO3. Bright blue soln in 10% aq NaOH. LD50 orally in rats: >2 g/kg (Lu, Lavalle).

Use: Biological stain. Color additive in food, drugs and cosmetics.
