Percent Composition: C 11.54%, H 3.87%, N 53.84%, O 30.75%
Line Formula: H2NC(NH)NHNO2
Literature References: Prepd by the action of concd H2SO4 on guanidine nitrate: Davis, Org. Synth. 7, 68 (1927).

Derivative Type: a-Form
Properties: (The usual stable form): Needles, prisms from water, dec 225-250° (depending on speed of heating) giving off NH3 fumes. Absorption spectrum: Riegel, Buchwald, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 51, 491 (1929). One liter of water dissolves 4.4 g at 25°; 82.5 g at 100°. Slightly soluble in methanol (<0.5%), alcohol; practically insol in ether. Sol in concd acids from which it is precipitated by water. Sol in cold solns of alkalies (not of carbonates) with slow decompn.

Derivative Type: b-Form
Properties: Prepd by the nitration of guanidine sulfate with fuming HNO3. Is converted into the a-form by dissolving in concd H2SO4 and pouring into ice water: Davis et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 47, 1065 (1925).

Use: Explosive of moderate power. Can be exploded only with a detonator. Intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals.
