Properties: White when pure. Usually obtained as a gray-black or brownish, amorphous solid showing a yellow bloom. Sensitive to light. d 4.7. mp 690°. Very hygroscopic, is converted to a greasy black mass on exposure to atmospheric moisture. Violent reaction with water (instant hydrolytic cleavage). Powerful oxidizing agent giving off some ozone when treated with dil acids. Liberates iodine from iodides. May be stored in quartz or iron ampuls.
Melting point: mp 690°
Density: d 4.7
CAUTION: Symptoms due to fluoride. Highly toxic.
Use: In the fluorination of hydrocarbons.
