Title: Trihydrazine Dihydriodide
CAS Registry Number: 10034-92-1
Additional Names: Hydrazine dihydriodide
Molecular Formula: H14I2N6
Molecular Weight: 351.96
Percent Composition: H 4.01%, I 72.11%, N 23.88%
Line Formula: (N2H5+I-)2.N2H4
Literature References: Prepared from hydrazine (85-100%) and hydriodic acid in ethanol at pH 8-9: Curtius, Schulz, J. Prakt. Chem. 42, 540 (1890); Gilbert, Decius, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 80, 3871 (1958).
Properties: Large, white, biaxial needles from abs ethanol, mp 90-92°. Crystals stored in a glass-stoppered bottle at room temp showed no deterioration over a six month period. Freely sol in water with formation of hydrazine monoiodide and hydriodic acid. The hydrazine is very strongly held in the dry crystals. Exposure in a vacuum still at 25 microns and room temperature for 5½ hours showed no loss in weight. The neutral hydrazine molecule is probably hydrogen-bonded to the N2H5+ ions.
Melting point: mp 90-92°
