N-Cyclopropylmethylnorcodeine (I) was converted to thebainone (II) upon treatment with butyllithium, and then hydrogenated over Pd/C to afford dihydrothebainone (III). Then, Fischer indole synthesis of (III) with phenylhydrazine in the presence of p-toluenesulfonic acid furnished the title compound.
