Reaction of di-tert-butyl D-tartrate (I) with 3,4-diacetylcaffeoyl chloride (II) in the presence of pyridine gave the chicoric acid derivative (III). The tert-butyl ester groups were then cleaved by treatment with trifluoroacetic acid in CH2Cl2.
