The reaction of 2-chloroethyl vinyl ether (III) with bromine gives 1,2-dibromo-2-[(2-chloro)ethoxy]ethane (IV) which reacts with the magnesian derivative (II) [obtained from (3-trifluoromethyl)bromobenzene (I) and magnesium in anhydrous ether] to give 2-[(3-trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-2-[(2-chloro)ethoxy]-1-bromoethane (V). The compound (V) is heated in an autoclave at 100 C with isopropylamine (VI) in toluene.
