Properties: Orthorhombic, translucent prisms from water. Somewhat bitter taste. mp 105.5° (softens at 96°). bp2 194-201°. uv max (hexane): 248.5 nm (e 16000). Soly in water at 20° = 7.69 g/100 ml; at 37° = 48.2 g/100 ml. Also sol in alcohol. Hydrolyzed by alkali.
