Properties: Brown powder. Absorption max (water): 524 nm; in 95% alcohol: 531 nm. Soluble in water to cherry-red soln; sol in alcohol. HCl added to an aq soln produces a yellowish-brown ppt. Sodium hydroxide produces a red ppt sol in an excess of the reagent. LD50 in male, female mice, male, female rats (g/kg): 0.40, 0.32, 0.34, 0.37 i.p.; 6.7, 6.9, 7.4, 6.8 orally (Butterworth). Also reported as LD50 in mice, rats (mg/kg): 2558, 2891 orally (Yankell).
