Properties: Colorless crystals, mp -70°; colorless liq, very unstable, dec below -10° on exposure to air. Slight traces of iron carbonyls impart a red or yellow color. Gas has extremely nauseating odor. Sol in alkalies; neutral aq solns of salts unstable at room temp; strongly alkaline solns of salts, e.g. K2Fe(CO)4, are stable at room temp when all traces of air are excluded but dec gradually at 100° to CO and H2.
Melting point: mp -70°
