Properties: Translucent crystals or white, cryst powder; cooling saline taste. Slightly effloresces in warm air. d 1.79; mp 70-80°; at 100° loses 3H2O; becomes anhydr at 130-140°; at 220° begins to dec. Sol in 0.9 part water. Almost insol in alcohol. The aq soln is slightly alkaline to litmus. pH 7-8. Incompat. Acids, calcium or lead salts, magnesium sulfate, silver nitrate.
Melting point: mp 70-80°
Density: d 1.79
 
Use: Manuf of mirrors; as a constituent of Fehling's soln. For the control of radio frequencies, and wherever piezoelectric crystals are used.
Therap-Cat: Cathartic.
