Properties: Crystals from methanol or 80% alcohol. Darkens at 190°, mp 209-210° (copper block). Shows mutarotation. [a]D20 +23° ® -3.2° (c = 5 in water). Sol in water, methanol, 80% alcohol. Is hydrolyzed to 1 mol D-glucose and 1 mol D-xylose by boiling 2% H2SO4 for 5 hrs. Reduces Fehling's soln slowly in the cold, instantly when hot.
Melting point: mp 209-210° (copper block)
Optical Rotation: [a]D20 +23° ® -3.2° (c = 5 in water)
