Cytochromes P450
Structural Formula Vector Image
Title: Cytochromes P450
Additional Names: P450
Literature References: Hemoproteins involved in enzyme hydroxylation, demethylation, and N-oxidation; present in a number of mammalian tissues but in highest concentrations in adrenal and liver microsomes. Has also been found in insects, yeast, plants, and bacteria. Existence of mitochondrial P450 first reported by Harding et al., Biochim. Biophys. Acta 92, 415 (1964). Extraction and purification: Mitani, Horie, J. Biochem. 65, 269 (1969). Acts as a monooxygenase in catalyzing metabolic functions; influences the rate of drug metabolism. Name derived from the characteristic absorption at 450 nm. Reviews: several authors in Oxidases and Redox Systems vol. 2, King et al., Eds. (University Park Press, Baltimore, 1971); J. T. Groves, Advances in Inorganic Biochemistry vol. 1, G. L. Eichhorn, L. G. Marzilla, Eds. (Elsevier/North-Holland, New York, 1979) pp 119-145; several authors in Xenobiotica 12, 671-800 (1982). Books: Cytochromes P-450 & B5: Structure, Function & Interaction, D. Y. Cooper et al., Eds. (Plenum, New York, 1975) 554 pp; Cytochrome P-450, R. Sato, T. Omura, Eds. (Academic Press, New York, 1978) 233 pp; Biochemistry, Biophysics and Regulation of Cytochrome P-450, J. A. Gustafsson et al., Eds. (Elsevier/North-Holland, New York, 1980) 626 pp.
